Portrait of Beethoven
Joseph Karl Stieler·1820
Historical Context
Joseph Karl Stieler painted this iconic portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven in 1820, creating what became the most famous image of the composer. Beethoven was 49 and profoundly deaf when he sat for Stieler, and was then working on his late masterpieces including the Missa Solemnis. Stieler, the Bavarian court painter, captured Beethoven holding the manuscript of the Missa Solemnis, lending the portrait documentary as well as iconic significance.
Technical Analysis
Stieler's polished academic technique renders Beethoven's powerful features and wild hair with vivid clarity. The dramatic contrast between the white shirt and dark coat focuses attention on the composer's intense, almost fierce expression, creating an enduring image of Romantic genius.
