Altarpiece of St Proculus
Ambrogio Lorenzetti·1332
Historical Context
Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Altarpiece of Saint Proculus, painted around 1332 and now in the Uffizi Gallery, was created for the church of San Procolo in Florence during one of the Sienese painter's documented periods of residence in the rival city. Ambrogio's time in Florence exposed him directly to the Giottesque tradition, and his Florentine works show a distinctive synthesis of Sienese coloristic refinement with Florentine spatial clarity. The altarpiece honoring the early Christian martyr Proculus reflects the parish church's dedication to its titular saint.
Technical Analysis
Painted in tempera on gold-ground panel, the altarpiece demonstrates Ambrogio's sophisticated approach to spatial construction with a convincingly receding throne and carefully positioned figures. The modeling of forms shows the artist's characteristic blend of Sienese soft coloring with the more sculptural volumetric approach he absorbed from Florentine painting.
