Entombment of Christ
Pietro Lorenzetti·1310
Historical Context
Pietro Lorenzetti's Entombment of Christ is part of his Passion cycle in the Lower Basilica of San Francesco at Assisi, painted around 1310–1320. The scene depicting Christ's burial was a moment of supreme grief in the Passion narrative and held special significance in Franciscan spirituality, which emphasized compassionate meditation on Christ's suffering. Pietro's treatment of the Entombment at Assisi became one of the most emotionally powerful versions of this subject in all of Gothic painting, influencing subsequent depictions throughout the fourteenth century.
Technical Analysis
The fresco employs a compressed, intensely focused composition that draws the viewer into the mourners' grief. Pietro's bold modeling of forms and his use of deep, saturated colors create a gravitas that distinguishes his narrative style from the more lyrical approach of contemporary Sienese painters.
