Madonna with Child and St Catherine, St Nicolas and Donor
Gentile da Fabriano·1395
Historical Context
Gentile da Fabriano painted this Madonna with donor around 1395, early in a career that would make him the most celebrated International Gothic painter in Italy. Before his landmark Adoration of the Magi (1423) brought him fame in Florence, Gentile worked across northern Italy, and this panel reflects the courtly elegance and decorative richness that aristocratic patrons in the Marche and Lombardy favored. The Gothic era in European painting (c.1200-1400) was dominated by devotional works on gold ground, combining Byzantine formalism with growing Gothic naturalism.
Technical Analysis
The gold ground and delicate punch-work ornamentation follow International Gothic conventions, while the softly modeled faces and naturalistic drapery folds show Gentile's distinctive ability to infuse decorative splendor with convincing three-dimensionality.
