Zwei Reihen weibliche Heilige und Apostel
Historical Context
Niccolò di Buonaccorso, a Sienese miniaturist and panel painter active in the 1380s, created these two registers of female saints and apostles as part of a larger devotional ensemble. His refined, small-scale work reflects the continuing influence of Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers in late Trecento Siena. Niccolò's exquisite technique and attention to decorative detail place him among the most accomplished practitioners of the Sienese miniaturist tradition.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the paired registers display Niccolò's miniaturist precision with finely detailed drapery, delicate facial features, and meticulously tooled gold haloes. The small scale and jewel-like finish suggest this may have formed part of a portable tabernacle or reliquary frame.
