Landscape with Rainbow, Henley-on-Thames by Johannes Siberechts

Landscape with Rainbow, Henley-on-Thames

Johannes Siberechts·1690

Historical Context

Johannes Siberechts painted Landscape with Rainbow, Henley-on-Thames in 1690, some years after he had relocated from Antwerp to England, where he became the first significant specialist in English topographical landscape painting. Born in Antwerp and trained in the Flemish tradition, Siberechts adapted his skills to the demands of English aristocratic clients who wanted records of their estates and the surrounding countryside. The rainbow arching over the Thames Valley at Henley transforms what might have been a straightforward topographical view into something more elevated — a vision of the English landscape as luminous and ordered. The picture's combination of precise local observation with atmospheric ambition places it at the beginning of a tradition of English landscape painting that would culminate in Constable and Turner more than a century later.

Technical Analysis

Siberechts structures the composition around the diagonal sweep of the river valley, with the rainbow providing a monumental curved accent against the cloudy sky. The handling blends Flemish topographical precision in the foreground details with a broader atmospheric treatment of the sky. The color palette is cool and moist, capturing English summer light.
