The Mule Pack
Frederic Remington·1901
Historical Context
The Mule Pack at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston depicts the pack-mule trains that were the logistical backbone of military operations in the American Southwest, where rough terrain made wheeled vehicles impractical. Remington had observed supply operations directly during his travels with Army units in Arizona and New Mexico, and his paintings of pack trains carry the authority of recorded observation. The mule pack was a less glamorous subject than cavalry charges or Native ceremonies, but it documented the actual material conditions of Western expansion with a specificity that illustrated his commitment to honest documentation.
Technical Analysis
A column of laden mules in motion required Remington to handle multiple animals in overlapping spatial recession. He uses the repeated forms of mule and rider to create a rhythmic movement through the landscape, with dust and terrain providing atmospheric depth.
