Bathers at Asnières (Study III)
Georges Seurat·1883
Historical Context
Painted in 1883 and now at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, this study panel is one of the most important preparatory works for 'Bathers at Asnières,' providing evidence of Seurat's methodical compositional process. The Scottish National Gallery study captures the bathers in their essential spatial relationships before the final canvas's decisive refinement of form and colour. Edinburgh and London between them hold a remarkable concentration of Seurat's Asnières studies, allowing scholars to trace the development of his method across the period 1883–84.
Technical Analysis
The panel handles the figures in a more fluid, less systematic manner than the finished canvas, with forms blocked in broadly and the divisionist colour separation only partially realised. The study establishes the outdoor light conditions—warm sunlight on pale skin against cool river water—that structure the final work.
