A Martyrdom
Historical Context
This martyrdom scene by the Master of the San Lucchese Altarpiece depicts the suffering of an unidentified saint, likely from the same dismembered polyptych as the companion Baptism panel also in Edinburgh. The anonymous Tuscan master, active around the mid-fourteenth century in the region between Florence and Siena, worked in the prevailing post-Giottesque idiom. Martyrdom scenes were essential components of Gothic altarpiece programs, presenting saints as heroic witnesses to faith whose sacrifices merited veneration.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the narrative scene depicts the moment of martyrdom with direct figural interaction and expressive gesture. The anonymous master's solid but somewhat provincial draftsmanship reflects the broad dissemination of Giottesque compositional principles across Tuscan workshops.
