Saint Peter: Left Main Tier Panel
Historical Context
Niccolò di Pietro Gerini's Saint Peter panel formed part of a large altarpiece's main tier, reflecting the Florentine workshop tradition of the late Trecento. Niccolò was a conservative but highly competent painter who maintained the formal traditions established by Giotto's followers while working prolifically for Florentine churches and confraternities from the 1370s through 1415. His altarpieces served the liturgical needs of a city where traditional devotional imagery remained in demand despite emerging proto-Renaissance innovations.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on gold-ground panel with careful modelling in the Giottesque tradition, emphasizing volumetric drapery folds and dignified facial types. The tooled gold background and architectural framing elements are executed with the precision expected of a leading Florentine workshop.
