The Trinity
Jacopo di Cione·1370
Historical Context
Jacopo di Cione's Trinity panel of around 1370, now in the National Gallery, London, formed part of a large altarpiece ensemble from the workshop's most productive decade. The Throne of Grace composition — God the Father supporting the crucified Christ with the Holy Spirit as a dove — was a standard Trinitarian iconography in Gothic Italy, rooted in theological formulations central to Florentine Dominican and Franciscan preaching. The image served both doctrinal instruction and contemplative devotion.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on panel with burnished gold ground, the work employs the workshop's characteristic symmetrical composition, firm contour drawing, and systematic drapery modeling to convey the theological gravity of the subject.
