Panel of Saint Ursula
Historical Context
This Panel of Saint Ursula by the Segon Mestre de Bierge (Second Master of Bierge) dates to around 1300 and represents the Aragonese Gothic painting tradition of northeastern Spain. Saint Ursula, the legendary British princess martyred with 11,000 companions at Cologne, was widely venerated across medieval Europe. The panel likely formed part of a larger altarpiece dedicated to the saint, produced for a church in the Aragonese Pyrenean region.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel in the distinctive Aragonese Gothic style, which retains strong Romanesque formal elements including bold outlines, flat color areas, and frontal presentation. The composition reflects the regional tradition of combining narrative and iconic modes within a compartmentalized altarpiece format.
