Altar frontal of the Corpus Christi
Guillem Seguer·1340
Historical Context
Guillem Seguer's Altar Frontal of the Corpus Christi, dated around 1340, is a rare example of Catalan Gothic altar decoration from the period when Barcelona was emerging as a major Mediterranean cultural centre. Altar frontals — horizontal panels placed before the altar table — were central to Iberian liturgical furnishing and this example follows the tradition of compartmentalizing sacred scenes with architectural frames, reflecting Gothic influence from French and Italian models filtered through Aragonese taste. Seguer, active in the Tarragona region, represents the intersection of local Romanesque memory and incoming Gothic naturalism.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera on panel with gilded background, the work is organized into registers of narrative compartments. Seguer uses flat, bright colour areas with minimal modelling, firm outlines, and gilt punchwork halos typical of Catalan Gothic craftsmanship of the mid-fourteenth century.
