Westminster from Lambeth, with the Ceremonial Barge of the Ironmongers' Company
Samuel Scott·1745
Historical Context
Westminster from Lambeth, with the Ceremonial Barge of the Ironmongers' Company, painted around 1745, captures one of the magnificent livery company barges that processed along the Thames during the Lord Mayor's Show. These ornate vessels, rowed by liveried watermen, were among the most spectacular sights on the Georgian Thames, and Scott was the painter best qualified to record them. Scott's Thames views constitute the most comprehensive pictorial survey of London's riverside ever undertaken by a single artist.
Technical Analysis
The ceremonial barge is rendered with lavish attention to its gilded carving and decorative details, set against the Westminster skyline. The contrast between the ornate barge and the working river traffic creates a compositional richness characteristic of Scott's best Thames views.
