Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist and a Clerical Donor
Lippo Vanni·1350
Historical Context
Lippo Vanni's Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist, and a Clerical Donor, dating to around 1350, combines the central Passion subject with a portrait of its ecclesiastical patron in the manner typical of Sienese Gothic devotional commissions. Lippo Vanni was a painter and miniaturist active in Siena from the 1340s through the 1370s, known for both panel paintings and manuscript illumination in the refined Sienese Gothic tradition. The inclusion of a clerical donor kneeling at the foot of the cross reflects the personal, intercessory function of privately commissioned devotional panels.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera and gold on panel with the elegant draughtsmanship and delicate colour harmonies characteristic of the Sienese school. The composition follows the standard Gothic Crucifixion format with flanking mourners, while the diminutive donor figure establishes the medieval hierarchy of spiritual and temporal scale.
