Scenes from the life of Saint Peter
Guido di Graziano·1280
Historical Context
This narrative panel depicting scenes from the life of Saint Peter by Guido di Graziano reflects the Sienese school's growing interest in sequential storytelling during the late thirteenth century. Guido di Graziano was a contemporary of Duccio who worked in a more conservative Byzantine-influenced manner, and his multi-scene narrative panels follow the tradition of painted dossals that served both liturgical and didactic purposes in Italian Gothic churches. The work is preserved in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the work organizes multiple episodes from Peter's life in compartmentalized scenes separated by architectural framing elements. Guido's style retains strong Byzantine characteristics in the figural types and drapery conventions, with limited spatial depth in each narrative vignette.
