Christ on the Cross mourned by the Virgin Mary and Saints Mary Magdalene and John
Master Francesco·1392
Historical Context
Master Francesco, a late Trecento Italian painter whose identity remains debated among scholars, created this Crucifixion with mourning figures around 1392. The presence of both Mary Magdalene and Saint John alongside the Virgin at the foot of the cross follows the expanded Calvary iconography that became standard in Gothic devotional painting. The panel's current location in the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen reflects the extensive nineteenth-century collecting of Italian Gothic paintings by northern European institutions.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on panel with gold ground, showing the crucified Christ flanked by three mourning figures arranged in a pyramidal composition. The style is characteristic of late Trecento Florentine workshop production, with competent figure modeling and conventional but effective drapery patterns.
