Madonna and Child, with the Man of Sorrows [middle panel]
Nardo di Cione·1360
Historical Context
Nardo di Cione, brother of the more famous Andrea di Cione (Orcagna), was among the leading Florentine painters of the mid-fourteenth century, best known for his monumental frescoes in the Strozzi Chapel of Santa Maria Novella. This central panel of a triptych combines the Madonna and Child with the Man of Sorrows, linking the Incarnation to the Passion in a single devotional image. Such theological pairing was characteristic of the sophisticated Christological programs developed in Florentine Gothic altarpieces.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the triptych center shows Nardo's characteristic monumental figural style with strong volumetric modeling inherited from Giotto's workshop. The composition balances the tender Madonna group with the somber Passion imagery, unified by rich gilding and tooled ornament.
