Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Pietro Lorenzetti·1343
Historical Context
Pietro Lorenzetti, one of the two great Lorenzetti brothers who transformed Sienese painting, created this image of Saint Catherine of Alexandria near the end of his career, around 1343. Catherine, the learned princess-martyr, was one of the most venerated saints in medieval Europe, and her image appeared frequently in Gothic altarpiece panels. Pietro's late works show an increasing emotional depth and spatial sophistication that anticipated developments not fully realized until the early Renaissance.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel, with the saint rendered in Pietro's mature style combining Sienese linear refinement with powerful volumetric modeling. The figure's three-dimensionality and expressive presence reveal Pietro's ability to synthesize Duccio's elegance with Giotto's structural innovations.
