Madonna and Child with Saints by Agostino Carracci

Madonna and Child with Saints

Agostino Carracci·1586

Historical Context

Agostino Carracci, the elder brother of Annibale and cousin of Ludovico, painted this Madonna and Child with Saints around 1586 during the early years of the Carracci academy in Bologna. The Carracci family led a revolution in Italian painting, rejecting the artificiality of late Mannerism in favor of a return to naturalism and the study of the great masters of the High Renaissance. Agostino was also celebrated as one of the finest engravers of his generation.

Technical Analysis

The painting demonstrates the Carracci reform principles with its balanced composition, naturalistic modeling, and warm palette. The figures show the influence of Correggio's soft sfumato and Veronese's color, reflecting the eclectic approach the Carracci advocated.
