The Afternoon Meal (La Merienda)
Luis Meléndez·1772
Historical Context
Luis Egidio Meléndez's The Afternoon Meal from 1772, at the Metropolitan Museum, is a masterwork of Spanish bodegón (still life) painting depicting the simple foods of a Spanish afternoon snack. Meléndez was the greatest Spanish still-life painter of the eighteenth century, creating compositions of humble kitchen objects and foodstuffs that rival the best Dutch Golden Age still lifes in their precision and presence. Despite his extraordinary talent, Meléndez lived in poverty and died destitute, his works gaining recognition only in the twentieth century.
Technical Analysis
Meléndez renders the bread, fruit, and ceramic vessels with almost tactile realism, each surface—from the bread's crusty exterior to the glazed ceramic's sheen—described with microscopic precision. The warm palette and strong directional lighting create a sense of monumental presence from humble objects.
