Study for "Luxe calme et volupté" by Henri Matisse

Study for "Luxe calme et volupté"

Henri Matisse·1904

Historical Context

Study for 'Luxe calme et volupté' from 1904, now in the Museum of Modern Art, is a preparatory work for one of the pivotal paintings of early modernism. Luxe calme et volupté, exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905, was Matisse's most ambitious engagement with the Divisionist technique he had learned from Paul Signac at Saint-Tropez the previous summer. The finished painting — now in the Musée d'Orsay — shows nude figures on a Mediterranean shore. This preparatory study documents his working process, revealing how he approached the composition before committing to the demanding Divisionist execution of the final version.

Technical Analysis

The study shows Matisse working through compositional and tonal problems before applying the systematic Divisionist stroke-by-stroke method of the finished painting. The handling is freer and more exploratory than the final work, allowing the viewer a rare glimpse into his preparatory thinking and compositional instincts.
