Madonna, Child and Two Angels

The Master of the Coronation of Bellpuig, an anonymous Catalan painter active in the mid-fourteenth century, created this Madonna and Child with Two Angels. Catalan Gothic painting flourished under the patronage of the Crown of Aragon, developing a distinctive visual language that merged Italianate influences, particularly from Siena, with indigenous Iberian traditions. This panel, now in the Brooklyn Museum, reflects the Mediterranean exchange of artistic ideas between Italy and the Iberian Peninsula.
