Das kaiserliche Lustschloß Schönbrunn, Ehrenhofseite
Bernardo Bellotto·1759
Historical Context
Bernardo Bellotto's view of the Ehrenhofseite of Schönbrunn Palace from 1759-61 documents the Habsburg summer residence outside Vienna, painted during his period as court painter to Empress Maria Theresa. Bellotto, Canaletto's nephew and pupil, brought the Venetian veduta tradition to courts across Central Europe, creating topographical records of extraordinary precision in Vienna, Dresden, Munich, and Warsaw. His views of Schönbrunn capture the palace in its eighteenth-century state before later modifications.
Technical Analysis
Bellotto's technique achieves remarkable architectural precision, rendering every window, cornice, and decorative detail of the palace facade with documentary accuracy. His characteristic cooler palette and sharper shadows distinguish his vedute from his uncle Canaletto's warmer Venetian light.
