Dying athlete or wounded Roman soldier
Jean Germain Drouais·1785
Historical Context
Jean Germain Drouais painted this dying athlete or wounded Roman soldier in 1785, his last year of life at age twenty-two. Drouais, David's most brilliant pupil, had won the Prix de Rome in 1784 and died in Rome of smallpox the following year. David was devastated by the loss and considered Drouais his artistic successor. This powerful académie figure demonstrates the extraordinary talent cut short by early death.
Technical Analysis
Drouais renders the muscular male figure with the anatomical precision and sculptural modeling learned from David. The dramatic lighting and heroic scale show a young artist already working at the highest level of Neoclassical figure painting.
