The Angel of the Annunciation
Matteo Giovanetti·1345
Historical Context
The Angel of the Annunciation by Matteo Giovanetti, dating to around 1345 and now in the Louvre, is by the Italian painter who served as the principal artist at the papal court in Avignon during the papacy of Clement VI. Giovanetti was responsible for the major fresco campaigns in the Palais des Papes, making him one of the most important artists working in France during the Gothic period. This Annunciation panel, originally part of a diptych with a companion Virgin, reflects the refined devotional art produced for the Avignon papal circle.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the angel Gabriel is rendered with the elegant linearity and courtly grace characteristic of the Avignon school. The luminous palette and refined detailing of wings and drapery show Giovanetti's synthesis of Sienese decorative refinement with French Gothic sensibility.
