Calvary with St. Francis of Assisi and the Young St. Vitus
Historical Context
Francesco di Vannuccio, a Sienese painter active in the second half of the fourteenth century, created this devotional panel combining the Crucifixion with Saints Francis of Assisi and the young Saint Vitus. The inclusion of St. Francis at the foot of the cross reflects the Franciscan theology of imitatio Christi — the saint was believed to have received the stigmata in imitation of Christ's wounds. This intimate, small-scale panel, now in the Louvre, was likely intended for private devotion rather than public church display.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera on gold-ground panel, the work demonstrates the refined miniaturist technique common among smaller Sienese workshops. The delicate figure drawing and jewel-like color application suggest Francesco di Vannuccio's background in manuscript illumination alongside panel painting.
