Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints
Agnolo Gaddi·1375
Historical Context
Agnolo Gaddi, son of Taddeo and grandson in artistic spirit of Giotto himself, painted this Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints around 1375, representing the third generation of the Giottesque tradition in Florence. Agnolo moved the family workshop toward a more decorative, coloristic style that anticipated the International Gothic, while maintaining the monumental compositional frameworks established by his father and Giotto. The altarpiece is now in the Galleria nazionale di Parma.
Technical Analysis
Painted in tempera on gold ground panel, the enthroned Madonna presides over a symmetrical arrangement of saints in the traditional sacra conversazione format. Agnolo's technique features a lighter, more luminous palette than his father's work, with softer modeling and an increased emphasis on decorative pattern in the textiles and gold tooling.
