Rouen Cathedral, Portal, Cloudy Weather by Claude Monet

Rouen Cathedral, Portal, Cloudy Weather

Claude Monet·1892

Historical Context

Rouen Cathedral, Portal, Cloudy Weather (1892) at the Musée d'Orsay is one of the most important canvases in the series by virtue of its institutional home. The Orsay holds several of the finest Rouen Cathedral canvases and selected the cloudy weather variant as a representative example of the series' atmospheric range. The 1892 first-campaign canvases were exhibited alongside the 1893 group at Durand-Ruel in 1895, where critics including Clemenceau and Geffroy recognized the series as a philosophical meditation on time, light, and perception that transcended Impressionism's original empirical program.

Technical Analysis

Cloudy light equalizes tonal values across the facade, eliminating strong shadows and allowing the Gothic tracery's complexity to read as surface pattern rather than sculptural relief. Greys, blues, and muted pinks characterize the palette. Monet's strokes are medium-length and varied in direction.
