Polyptych with Scenes from the Life of Christ, the Life of the Virgin, and Saints
Arnau Bassa·1338
Historical Context
Arnau Bassa's polyptych with scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin, and saints, dated around 1345–1350 and now in the Morgan Library, is a major work of Catalan Gothic painting that reflects the artistic exchange between Barcelona and the Italian peninsula. Arnau Bassa, working alongside his father Ferrer Bassa, helped introduce Italianate naturalism to the Crown of Aragon, creating a distinctly Catalan synthesis of French Gothic elegance and Sienese spatial experimentation. The polyptych's compact format suggests it may have served as a portable altarpiece for private devotion.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera and gold on panel in a multi-compartment polyptych format, the work combines Italianate figural modeling with the refined decorative sensibility of Catalan Gothic art. The narrative scenes display clear, well-organized compositions with architectural framing elements, while the color palette favors rich reds, blues, and greens set against extensive gold grounds.
