Madonna in Throne with Child and Two Angels
Meliore di Jacopo·1250
Historical Context
This enthroned Madonna with Child and two angels by Meliore di Jacopo, one of the earliest documented Florentine painters, dates to around 1250 and represents the formative phase of Florentine Gothic panel painting. Meliore was active at a time when Florence's painting tradition was still heavily indebted to Byzantine models, though his work shows early signs of the Western Gothic sensibility that would soon transform the city's art. Created for the church of Santa Maria, this panel served the central devotional function of presenting the Virgin as intercessor and protector of the faithful.
Technical Analysis
Executed in tempera and gold on panel, the composition follows the Byzantine Hodegetria type with the enthroned Virgin presenting the Christ Child, flanked by symmetrical angels. Meliore's style retains the strong outlines and flat gold ground of Byzantine convention while introducing subtle Western Gothic elements in the drapery patterns.
