Allegretto Nuzi·1369
Historical Context
Allegretto Nuzi's Madonna with Child, Angels, and Saints between Saints Anthony Abbot and Julian, dated 1369, remains in situ at the Church of San Giuliano, preserving its original devotional context. Nuzi was the principal painter of Fabriano in the Marches during the mid-fourteenth century, developing a distinctive style that combined Giottesque solidity with Sienese decorative refinement. This altarpiece served the liturgical needs of the parish church, with the patron saints flanking the central sacra conversazione.
Technical Analysis
The tempera-on-panel altarpiece features elaborate gold tooling in the halos and background, with rich chromatic contrasts of vermilion, ultramarine, and green earth pigments. Nuzi's figures display rounded, softly modeled forms with gentle facial expressions characteristic of his mature Marchigian Gothic style.
