St Sebastian Beaten with Sticks.
Nicolò Semitecolo·1367
Historical Context
Nicolò Semitecolo's St. Sebastian Beaten with Sticks, painted in 1367 and now in the Diocesan Museum of Padua, is part of a series of panels depicting the martyrdom of St. Sebastian commissioned for the cathedral of Padua. Semitecolo was the leading Paduan painter before Altichiero's arrival and played an important role in developing the city's distinctive artistic identity, blending Venetian coloristic traditions with the narrative ambitions emerging from contact with Giottesque art.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel. Semitecolo demonstrates notable narrative expressiveness with dynamic figure poses and emotional intensity in the torturers' actions, using bold outlines and strong color contrasts to heighten the drama of the martyrdom scene.
