Crocifisso con la Madonna, san Giovanni e la Maddalena
Federico Barocci·1600
Historical Context
This crucifix with the Madonna, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene is a standard Passion iconography — the group at the foot of the cross — executed by Barocci in his late manner. The Crucifixion with mourning figures was one of the most demanded subjects in Catholic devotional painting, and Barocci's version would have been intended for chapel or private devotion. His treatment of grief is characteristically restrained and tender rather than dramatically theatrical — the figures united by shared suffering rather than separated by individual reaction. The c.1600 date suggests a late-period autograph work or a studio piece.
Technical Analysis
Barocci organises the figures around the vertical axis of the cross, the mourning group at the base providing emotional warmth against the tragic subject. His palette remains characteristically warm and light even in a Passion scene — rose, pale blue, warm olive. The transitions between figures and background are softly atmospheric.
