Portrait of Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies
Vincenzo Camuccini·1818
Historical Context
Vincenzo Camuccini painted King Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies around 1818, depicting the Bourbon monarch who ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Ferdinand had survived the Napoleonic upheavals and the brief Napoleonic period when his kingdom was given to Murat. Camuccini, as the leading neoclassical painter in Rome, was the natural choice for royal portrait commissions from the Italian courts.
Technical Analysis
Camuccini's portrait presents the Bourbon king with neoclassical restraint and formal dignity. The polished technique and ordered composition reflect his commitment to the Grand Manner tradition of state portraiture.
