Entombment by Lorenzo Lotto

Entombment

Lorenzo Lotto·1550

Historical Context

This Entombment of Christ from 1550, now in the Courtauld Gallery in London, is among Lorenzo Lotto's last known paintings. Created just six years before his death, it reflects the profound religious devotion that characterized his final years. By this time, Lotto had retreated from the competitive Venetian art world and was preparing to enter the religious community at the Santa Casa in Loreto. The painting's somber intensity and stripped-down composition speak to a deeply personal faith, far removed from the confident grandeur of contemporary Venetian painting by Titian or Tintoretto.

Technical Analysis

The late Entombment shows Lotto's mature mastery of emotional expression through restrained means — subdued palette, compressed composition, and deeply felt gestures of grief. The loose, almost trembling brushwork conveys spiritual intensity over technical polish.
