St John the Evangelist
Historical Context
Francesco da Volterra was an Italian Gothic painter active in the mid-fourteenth century, part of the network of Tuscan artists who produced devotional panels for churches across the region. This Saint John the Evangelist, now in the Cini collection in Venice, likely formed part of a polyptych altarpiece. The apostle John, identified as the beloved disciple and author of the Fourth Gospel, was one of the most frequently depicted saints in Trecento panel painting, appearing in countless altarpiece ensembles.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on gold-ground panel, with the youthful apostle rendered in the manner typical of mid-fourteenth-century Tuscan workshops. The figure is depicted with a book and characteristic beardless face, set against a tooled gold background with the precise craftsmanship expected of professional altarpiece production.
