Madonna con il Bambino in trono tra i santi Pietro e Paolo e due angeli, san Giovanni Battista e santa Maria Maddalena nel deserto e la crocifissione
Historical Context
This polyptych by the Master of the Cappella Medici Polyptych depicts the Madonna Enthroned with Saints Peter, Paul, two angels, John the Baptist, and Mary Magdalene in the desert, as well as the Crucifixion — an unusually comprehensive theological programme that encompasses the Incarnation, Passion, and the principal apostolic and penitential saints. The master was a Florentine painter active in the 1310s-20s working in the tradition of Pacino di Bonaguida and the Giotto workshop. At the Cini Palace Gallery, this polyptych is a significant document of early Trecento Florentine panel painting, showing the emergence of Giottesque spatial and volumetric ambition within the Byzantine-derived format.
Technical Analysis
The multi-panel polyptych format organizes different aspects of the Christian programme across separate but thematically unified fields. Gold grounds and Byzantine-influenced figure types coexist with the emerging Giottesque interest in volumetric form and spatial coherence. The individual panels balance iconic frontality with the early hints of narrative psychological expression.
