The Battle of Waterloo
Jan Willem Pieneman·1824
Historical Context
Jan Willem Pieneman painted "The Battle of Waterloo" in 1824, the largest Dutch painting of the 19th century at over five meters wide. The monumental canvas depicts the moment when the Duke of Wellington receives news of the Prussian advance, ensuring Napoleon's defeat on June 18, 1815. Pieneman included portraits of many actual participants and traveled to London to paint Wellington and other commanders from life.
Technical Analysis
Pieneman orchestrates dozens of individual portrait figures within the chaotic battlefield composition, combining documentary accuracy with dramatic narrative. The enormous scale allows detailed depiction of uniforms, weapons, and military formations while maintaining visual coherence.
