La Sainte Trinité (retable de la Trinité)
Bartolo di Fredi·1350
Historical Context
The Holy Trinity panel formed the central element of Bartolo di Fredi's Trinity Altarpiece, now partially dispersed between the Louvre and other collections. The subject of the Throne of Grace, depicting God the Father holding the crucified Christ with the Holy Spirit as a dove, was one of the primary iconographic formulas for representing the Trinity in Gothic art. Bartolo's rendering of this theologically complex subject demonstrates the Sienese school's capacity for combining doctrinal precision with visual splendor.
Technical Analysis
Egg tempera on panel with extensive gold ground, featuring the elaborate tooling and punch-work decoration characteristic of major Sienese altarpieces. Bartolo employs rich, saturated colors in the robes of God the Father, with the crucified Christ rendered in subtle flesh tones, creating a powerful contrast against the luminous gold.
