Le Couronnement de la Vierge avec les apôtres
Historical Context
Simone dei Crocifissi was the leading painter of mid-fourteenth-century Bologna, named for his numerous Crucifixion paintings that filled the churches of that university city. This Coronation of the Virgin with the Apostles presents a grand celestial vision in which Christ crowns Mary as Queen of Heaven before the assembled apostolic college. The subject achieved peak popularity in the Gothic period, reflecting the intense Marian devotion promoted by both the mendicant orders and the papacy.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the composition arranges the celestial scene in a hierarchical format with Christ and the Virgin at center surrounded by the apostles. Simone dei Crocifissi's Bolognese style blends Byzantine formal traditions — still strong in Emilian painting — with the more naturalistic modeling introduced by Giotto and his followers.
