La Vierge de Majesté avec six anges et les donateurs Paci
Master of 1310·1310
Historical Context
This Maesta with Six Angels and Donor Portraits by the Master of 1310, now in the Louvre, represents the grand tradition of the enthroned Virgin that was central to Italian Gothic painting. The anonymous master, conventionally dated by a key work of 1310, worked in a Florentine style transitional between Cimabue's Byzantine-influenced manner and Giotto's revolutionary naturalism. The inclusion of the Paci family as donors indicates a private commissioning context, where wealthy Tuscan families secured their spiritual welfare through devotional patronage.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera and gold on panel, the composition follows the established Maesta format with the enthroned Virgin flanked by symmetrically arranged angels. The figures show a transitional style combining Byzantine hieratic formality with emerging Gothic naturalism in the softer facial modeling and more convincing spatial arrangement.
