Resurrection of Jesus
Master of Vyšší Brod·1350
Historical Context
The Resurrection of Jesus is part of the celebrated Vyssi Brod Cycle, one of the masterworks of Bohemian Gothic painting created around 1350 for the Cistercian monastery at Vyssi Brod. The anonymous Master of Vyssi Brod drew upon Italian Trecento models, likely transmitted through contacts between the Bohemian court and Italian artistic centers. This panel's provenance through the Munich Central Collecting Point reflects the complex wartime displacement of Central European cultural heritage.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with gold ground, blending Italian-derived modeling techniques with Northern Gothic linearity. The risen Christ emerges from the tomb with commanding presence, while the sleeping soldiers below display the dramatic foreshortening and expressive gestures characteristic of the Bohemian school.
