Historical Context
Goya painted "Saturn Devouring His Son" around 1820-1823 as the most terrifying of the Black Paintings. The ancient myth of the Titan Kronos (Saturn) devouring his children to prevent the prophecy of his overthrow has been interpreted as an allegory of time destroying all things, of Spain consuming its own people in civil conflict, or of Goya's own darkest psychological terrors. The painting has become one of the most disturbing images in Western art.
Technical Analysis
