Apoteosi di San Francesco
Giotto·1334
Historical Context
This Apotheosis of Saint Francis, dating from around 1334, is attributed to Giotto's workshop and depicts the glorification of the Franciscan founder saint. As one of Giotto's late works or workshop productions, it reflects the enormous demand for Franciscan devotional imagery in the decades following the saint's canonization. Giotto had a lifelong association with Franciscan patronage, beginning with the frescoes at Assisi and continuing through major commissions in Florence and Padua. The painting is now in a private collection.
Technical Analysis
The composition employs the hierarchical arrangement traditional for apotheosis scenes, with the saint elevated in glory above earthly witnesses. The painting style reflects the workshop's practice of following Giotto's compositional designs with varying levels of autograph participation. The gold background and rich tempera colors maintain the luminous quality characteristic of Giottesque panel painting.
