A Shepherd from a Nativity, fragment of a fresco removed from Santa Maria inter Angelos, Spoleto
Historical Context
This detached fresco fragment depicting a shepherd from a Nativity scene was originally part of the decorative program at Santa Maria inter Angelos in Spoleto, an Umbrian church. Attributed to the Master of the Palaces, an anonymous painter active in central Italy around 1300, it reflects the vigorous fresco tradition that flourished in Umbria during the late Duecento. The Nativity shepherds, witnessing the angelic announcement, were among the most humanized figures in Gothic religious imagery.
Technical Analysis
Executed in true fresco (buon fresco) technique on plaster, later detached and transferred for conservation, the fragment displays the bold outlines and simplified modeling typical of Umbrian Gothic wall painting. The shepherd's naturalistic gesture and expressive face show the influence of Roman and Assisi fresco cycles.
