The Lamentation over the Dead Christ
Historical Context
This Lamentation over the Dead Christ by the Master of the Fogg Pieta, an anonymous Florentine painter named after this very work, was created around 1330. The painting exemplifies the intense emotional devotion that characterized Italian Gothic religious art, where scenes of Christ's Passion were designed to elicit compassionate meditation from the faithful. The anonymous master worked within the Giottesque tradition but with a distinctly expressive approach to grief.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on panel, the composition groups the mourning figures around Christ's body in a compact, emotionally charged arrangement. The bold modeling and strongly contoured forms reflect Giottesque influence, while the heightened expressions of sorrow show the artist's particular gift for conveying pathos.
