A View from a Swedish Coast (1873) by Carl Frederik Sørensen, now in the collection of Nationalmuseum, is a marine subject reflecting the 19th-century tradition of coastal painting as both documentary record and atmospheric study of light on water. Carl Frederik Sørensen was Denmark's foremost marine painter of the 19th century, drawing on his early experience as a sailor to paint ships and coastal scenes with unusual authenticity and technical accuracy. Working in the tradition of the Dutch maritime masters while absorbing influences from contemporary Danish and German painting, he produced a large body of work depicting Danish naval history, harbor scenes.
