Laurits Andersen Ring's interior of a shoemaker's home, where a man reads the socialist newspaper Socialdemokraten aloud to two others, is among the most politically specific paintings in nineteenth-century Danish art. The newspaper — Denmark's leading socialist paper, founded 1871 — explicitly identifies the men as members of the emerging urban working class. Ring, who came from a rural background himself, was uniquely positioned to observe working-class interiors with both sympathy and precision. The scene captures the beginning of working-class political consciousness in Denmark: the reading circle, the labor newspaper, the cramped home as a space of awakening solidarity.
