This Baudoüin sketch combines two siege subjects in a single study: the transport of wounded to an ambulance station, and the queues of Parisians waiting in front of food shops during the 1870-71 Siege. The food shortage during the Siege, which forced Parisians to eat dogs, cats, and eventually zoo animals, was one of its most visceral collective memories. By pairing military casualties with civilian hunger, Baudoüin constructed a complete picture of siege suffering — the physical and psychological cost of a five-month blockade on an entire population.

The doubled subject requires a compositional solution that balances two distinct scenes. The sketch handles this through distinct spatial zones unified by a cold winter palette and the architectural setting of Haussmann-era Paris streets.
